The Jewish community of Barcelona, great promoter of the economy during the 13th and 14th centuries, left a strong mark on the city. The Jewish Quarter, the neighborhood where they settled down, conserves much of the charm and essence of that time and, you can visit it in a tailor-made route, made by BarcelonArt of Travel in collaboration with the History Museum of Barcelona, accompanied by a specialized guide.
The tour will take you through two Jewish neighborhoods of the city, the “Upper” Jewish Quarter, the first and largest, and the “Lower” Jewish Quarter, which was built as a result of the increase of the population. Here you will learn about the ritual of the Jewish baths, called mikvah.
The route ends at the Güell Palace, the first commission made to Gaudí by the industrialist Eusebi Güell, who later became his friend and patron.
This Palace, built between 1886 and 1890, is a spectacle of noble woods, like that of the main staircase, made with stone of the Pyrenees, and parabolic arches, an innovative element, present throughout the building.
An ornamental and functional style full of oriental details, sculptures, large windows that play with light and wrought iron doors. The impressive columns of the basement blocks with their exaggerated volumes and ribbed bricks are also a sample of Gaudí’s talent.
