Gaud\u00ed Centenary 2026<\/em><\/p>

The Crown of the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia: The Cross That Touches the Sky<\/h2>

On 20 February 2026, Barcelona held its breath. A giant crane slowly lifted the final arm of the cross crowning the Tower of Jesus Christ – and the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia reached its definitive height of 172.5 metres<\/strong>, becoming the tallest church in the world<\/strong>. But this is more than an engineering milestone. Every detail of this cross is a theological statement, a work of art, and the culmination of a vision Gaud\u00ed conceived over a century ago.<\/p>

A Cross Built Like a Cathedral<\/h4>

The cross alone stands 17 metres tall and 13.5 metres wide<\/strong> – roughly the height of a five-storey building suspended above the city. Fabricated in Germany in fourteen prefabricated pieces of stainless steel and reinforced concrete, it was assembled on a platform 54 metres above the nave before being raised to its final position above 160 metres.<\/p>

Its geometry is no accident: Gaud\u00ed’s signature double-twist form<\/strong>, the same technique used in the basilica’s columns, gives it a dynamic, almost living quality. Covered in white enamelled glass and ceramic<\/strong>, it was Gaud\u00ed’s explicit wish that it should appear to be made of crystal – catching and scattering the Mediterranean light across the Barcelona skyline.<\/p>

The Agnus Dei: A Lamb at the Heart of the Cross<\/h4>

At the centre of the cross rests one of its most poetic elements: the Agnus Dei<\/strong> (Lamb of God) – a sculpture by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito<\/strong>, selected through an international competition.<\/p>

Surrounding the lamb, the inscription reads:<\/em><\/p>

Tu solus Sanctus
<\/em><\/strong>Tu solus Dominus
<\/em><\/strong>Tu solus Altissimus<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

You alone are Holy. You alone are Lord. You alone are the Most High.<\/em><\/p>

The words Amen<\/strong> and Alleluia<\/strong> complete the message – a quiet, eternal declaration visible only to the sky, and to those who will one day ascend to the viewpoint within.<\/p>

Why 172.5 Metres – and Not One More<\/h4>

This height is no coincidence. Gaud\u00ed, a deeply devout man, refused to let his human creation surpass the work of God. His chosen limit was the nearby hill of Montju\u00efc<\/strong>, which rises to 177 metres above sea level.<\/p>

The secretary of the Junta Constructora, Mart\u00ed Matlleu – the same man who gave a radio conference about the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia broadcast across Spain and Latin America on St Joseph’s Day 1926 – had already written about this principle in 1914. A hundred years later, it has been faithfully honoured.<\/p>

The Future: A Viewpoint and a Fa\u00e7ade<\/h4>

The cross will eventually open as Barcelona’s highest panoramic viewpoint<\/strong>, but not before 2027<\/strong>, when the interior lift is completed. Given that the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia welcomed over 4.8 million visitors in 2024<\/strong>, access will be carefully managed in small groups.<\/p>

Meanwhile, the next great chapter begins: the Fa\u00e7ade of Glory<\/strong>, Gaud\u00ed’s intended main entrance on Carrer de Mallorca – the most complex, most controversial, and most eagerly awaited element still to come. Its completion is expected around 2036<\/strong>.<\/p>

10 June 2026: The Day It All Converges<\/h4>

The official inauguration of the Tower of Jesus coincides with the centenary of Gaud\u00ed’s death<\/strong>. Pope Leo XIV will visit Barcelona to preside over the ceremony – a moment that will draw pilgrims, architects, and travellers from across the world.<\/p>
