CATALAN BOURGEOISIE OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY: MODERNIST HOUSES ON TIBIDABO AVENUE

At the end of the 19th century, a visionary and successful pharmaceutical entrepreneur, Doctor Salvadro Andreu i Grau, wanted to create a city garden in Tibidabo, a residential area where the bourgeoisie of Barcelona would go to spend the summer. His tenacity was the key to the urbanization of the hillside and to overcome the mountain’s unevenness, he devised the construction of blue tramway and a funicular railway that would go up to the top of the Sacred Heart on Tibidabo.

On this route we will be able to visit with the help of our expert guide in the history of this part of the city, walking along the Avenida del Tibidabo, also known as the Avenida del Doctor Andreu, the magnificent modernist mansions and all the secrets they hide. From the Andreu Tower, passing through the Casa Muntades de Puig i Cadafalch, a fantastic modernist house-garden – inspired by the Catalan Baroque – which gives it the character of a rural farmhouse, until you reach the top of Tibidabo.

We start at Plaza Kennedy , with its history and the building of La Rotonda, whose real name is La Torre Andreu , built for the wealthy pharmacist in 1906 by Adolf Ruiz i Casaimtjana, later renovated by Enric Sagnier who commissioned the mosaic tower to the artist LLuis Bru. It belongs to the “Modernisme Route” which includes more than a hundred buildings in Barcelona.

Enric Sagnier , an architect who proliferated, built numerous commissions from the Catalan nobility and the Church, more than 300. In Tibidabo he built the Casa Evarist Arnús , also known as El Pinar, a neo-Gothic style mansion, which seems to re-emerge like a fairytale castle when illuminated at night and the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart culminating the Tibidabo mountain. Immerse yourself in the history of this stately avenue and enjoy a tour that culminates in Collserola Park with spectacular views of Barcelona.
