At the end of the 19th century, a visionary and successful pharmaceutical entrepreneur, Doctor Salvadro Andreu i Grau, wanted to create a city garden in Tibidabo, a residential area where the bourgeoisie of Barcelona would go to spend the summer. His tenacity was the key to the urbanization of the hillside and to overcome the mountain’s unevenness, he devised the construction of blue tramway and a funicular railway that would go up to the top of the Sacred Heart on Tibidabo.
On this route, we will be able to visit the magnificent modernist mansions and all the secrets they hide, guided by our expert guide in the history of this part of the city, along the Tibidabo Avenue, also known as Doctor Andreu Avenue. From the Andreu Tower through the Casa Muntades by Puig i Cadafalch, a fantastic modernist garden house – inspired by the Catalan baroque – which gives it the character of a rural farmhouse, until we reach the top of Tibidabo.
We start at the Plaza Kennedy, with its history and the building of La Rotonda, whose real name is La Torre Andreu, built for the wealthy pharmacist in 1906 by Adolf Ruiz i Casaimtjana, later reformed by Enric Sagnier who commissioned the mosaic tower to the artist LLuis Bru. It belongs to the “Modernisme route” which includes more than a hundred buildings in Barcelona.
Enric Sagnier, a prolific architect, built numerous commissions for the Catalan nobility and the Church, more than 300. On Tibidabo, he built the Casa Evarist Arnús also known as El Pinar, a neo-gothic style mansion, which seems to rise like a fairytale castle when lit up at night and the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart on the top of the Tibidabo mountain. Immerse yourself in the history of this stately avenue and enjoy a tour that culminates in Collserola Park with spectacular views of Barcelona
