The “Casal Gurguí”. Manuel Angelón Street

The turret in Manuel Angelon Street, where Mercè Rodoreda was born, was owned by her grandfather; probably he himself baptized it with the name of “Casal Gurguí”, with the idea of giving some importance to the house and the family, always ready to celebrate parties and poetic events, such as some floral games in the neighborhood.

In the Casal Gurguí there was a dovecote that inspired the motif of the pigeons in the novel “La plaza del Diamant”.

Located in the Diamant square we can visit the air raid shelter, which allows us to talk about the novel from the historical point of view, with references to the civil war. From here, we can partially reconstruct the landscape of Natàlia/Colometa: her apartment in Montseny street; Gran de Gracia Street, with its stores and shop windows, some of which still remind us, nowadays, how they must have been at the time of the characters in the novel.

During the second half of the 19th century, Barcelona’s wealthy families began to renovate farmhouses and build new houses to house their summer residences.

The Sagnier House is one of them.

As in her work “El espejo roto” (The Broken Mirror), she speaks of the Valldaura’s chalets “At the foot of the gate there was a very wide path, lined with chestnut trees; in the background, the house, three stories high, with two towers and green brick roofs, covered with ivy whose leaves were adquiring a reddish hue, was outlined against an autumn sky”  (Mercè Rodoreda, Broken Mirror, p. 62)

Passing through the passage St Felip we will mention Josep Plà. Who traced a note of the transformation of the neighborhood.

Casa Vicens first house by Antoni Gaudí, Mercat de la Llibertat, C/Montseny and Plaza Diamant,where the walking  tour will end. (1 h. 1,6 km)

On the way to the bookstore we will pass ones more through Pso de Gracia, Casa Milà (La Pedrera) and Casa Batlló, continuation of the literary route.
