Barcelona invites you to discover the unknown architecture of Antoni Gaudí, from another perspective beyond his emblematic works such as La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera or Park Güell.
The fasting man, the abstinent, the reader of the Bible, imagined and created unprecedented buildings on which it is worth opening our eyes wide. The experience will be irreversible… We’ll walk along a path with our official guide who will tell us about even the smallest detail of places that, in the end, will be as iconic as their most recognized works.
Have you heard about the book “Gaudí’s Gardens” by Don Juan Bassegoda Nonell? Here we will dive right into the plot of this literary marvel come to life. We will see the references of the fountains, jars, medallions, statues, grottoes… in 1887 the fountain in Plaça Catalunya was already part of Gaudí’s imagination, for whom water would have played a very important role.
We will visit the hidden sites of the Parc de la Ciutadella, fundamental in the history of gardening in Barcelona, which our Catalan master presented in an international competition in 1873 as a result of his work as an architect subcontracted by Josep Font, at a time when he needed money to continue his studies.
This student Gaudí, who was only a paid draughtsman, took charge of the park’s gazebo for the municipal band, whose balustrade he carefully designed with interesting sculptural details. Years later, the statue of Bonaventura Carles Aribau was placed in the center of the roundabout. He also designed the wrought iron and cast iron fence that surrounds the park with a perimeter of 1 km.
We’ll take a closer look at the grotto under the waterfall, a work also attributed to Gaudí because the formation of caves or similar was a constant in his architecture.
Continuing in the park of the Citadel, we will learn about another work of our Master, although this one strictly gardening. This is the calculation of the large elevated water reservoir. A huge pond built on brick pillars for the irrigation of the entire park.
At the end of this experience, we will not be aware of what Antoni Gaudí already possessed of genius when he was only a student, a boy of a few years of age but with a lot of intellect and genius for creativity.
