Carmen Amaya was born on the sand of the disappeared shanty town of Somorrostro, in the bosom of a gypsy family from Granada’s Sacramonte that oozed flamenco from every pore. His father, José El Chino, was the guitarist and his aunt, La Faraona, was a dancer. When he was only four years old, he was already performing with his father in venues such as Les Set Portes, but never in Tablaos but in theaters where he stood out for his iconoclastic style, which broke with the most traditional canons of any school of classical flamenco. His tremendous energy in the zapateado did not go unnoticed by anyone. What’s more, he even rubbed shoulders with Hollywood stars such as Orson Welles, Charles Chaplin and Greta Garbo.
There are several places in Begur and Barcelona where a monument is erected in his memory by the artist Rafael
Solanic
. There are also a sculpture of Carmen in Montjuïc, the work of José Cañas.
Carmen became famous as a child, when the Poble Espanyol was inaugurated on the mountain of Montjuïc, surprising King Alfonso XIII with her dancing and self-confidence. This forged a great friendship between them. His fame would become worldwide.
